Our aim is to allow you to develop YOUR own style with confidence, and your tuition will reflect this aim. Our past students rate our teaching and facilities as excellent, and everyone enjoys the relaxed and motivating ambience of the studio. Our reference library is available for students to use at their leisure. Inherent in all courses is the appreciation of the theories of form, composition, perspective and colour.
You will leave with at least one finished piece of work after a Taster Day, more if you are here for a longer course. We also provide written tips and hints for you to take away with you, and follow up advice if needed.
Watercolour
Watercolour painting in Pembrokeshire. Come and discover why so many artists are inspired by this wonderful landscape. Tuition will cover technical aspects such as different papers, paper stretching, washes, colour mixing, brushes and the characteristics of watercolour paint itself. We have a wide variety of watercolour materials here, and you will get advice on which suits your own style best.
Watercolour courses can be tailored as a one day Taster Day, ideal if you want to 'dip your toe in the water'! The day will cover basic techniques, choice of materials, and will get you painting straight away.
A two or three day course is a wonderful way to immerse yourself in your painting. The three day course allows time to go out on location, painting and sketching our wonderful landscape (weather permitting). We also run a five day Summer School each year.
Oil Painting
Looking for an oil painting course? Let Pembrokeshire's renowned beautiful scenery be your inspiration for developing your oil painting skills on a Studio Llwyndrain course.
Tuition will cover technical aspects such as surface preparation, colours, brush and knife strokes, perspective and composition. We have a wide variety of oil painting materials here, and you will get advice on which suits your own style best. We use odour free solvents.
Oil painting tuition can be arranged as a Taster Day, which is ideal for complete beginners, and will include all your materials. Longer courses will extend your experience of the various techniques used in this medium. The first day will be Studio based, allowing you to experiment with techniques before we devote the following days to embarking on a large painting using the Pembrokeshire coast or landscape as a theme.
Mixed Media
In our Mixed Media courses we utilise the local landscape and coast-line, as well as still life, as stimuli to create personal responses involving water based paint and applied materials. These courses are suitable for beginners, as well as the more experienced, who want to explore methods of constructing paintings ‘outside the box’ and develop new techniques.
You are welcome to bring source materials with you. Past students have incorporated natural materials, such as driftwood, into their finished artworks.
Printmaking
We offer tuition in mono printing, mono type and intaglio/collograph printing, using the very best water washable inks available. The press we have is capable of producing prints up to A3 in size.
We offer Taster Days as well as longer courses. Short courses will be studio based. You will be shown a variety of examples of each technique and then it’s up to you! No previous experience of any of these techniques is required. The five day Summer School will expand on these basics, allowing the artist to devote more time to any of the techniques above. We will include time out on location gathering source sketches and photographs (weather permitting).
Drawing
We will help develop your skills in pencil, pen and ink and charcoal. Perspective, composition, proportion and 3 dimensional space and form will all be explored in your work. We will be working on how you can develop rapid primary sketches into more studied compositions.
Drawing tuition can be tailored to suit your needs. Our courses range from regular weekly sessions to a three day program, which will involve work both in the Studio and out on location (weather permitting). The first morning will always involve a series of mini workshops allowing you to demonstrate your skills in the various media available. This will give me a good idea how to structure the remainder of the course for you.

One day Taster £60, Two days £115, Three days £175, Four days £230, Five day Summer School £275.
All prices are per person, non-residential, and include lunch, refreshments, all materials, and use of all the studio facilities.
